Magpie Hill Reserve Rieslings with Erin Larkin and John Jens

John Jens and Erin Larkin Video Tasting

Erin Larkin is the reviewer of Australian and New Zealand wines for Robert Parker Wine Advocate and is based in Perth, Western Australia. Prior to The Wine Advocate, Erin was the reviewer of Western Australian and many South Australian regions (Coonawarra, Clare Valley, Limestone Coast and others) for the James Halliday Wine Companion.

In her video series, Erin often reviews wines of high quality and value. We were elated when she teamed up with the irascible John Jens of Lamont's to explore Duke’s Vineyard flagship Magpie Hill Reserve Rieslings.

The Great Southern in Western Australia is Australia's largest GI by land mass, and it can be challenging to visit all of the five subregions inside of a week. Standout among them (in a riesling context) are Frankland River, Mount Barker and Porongurup, and it is here in this last little subregion that we make a stop.

The Porongurup Range is a unique rocky outcrop that juts out of the earth. The sun drenched northern face is the ideal vineyard spot (with one exception) and Duke's Magpie Hill vineyard is one of the golden stories of the cool and picturesque area. Here, JJ and I open six wines from five vintages to discuss the longevity, quality and pristine nature of these lovely wines.

Pour yourself a glass — or two — and enjoy the tasting video.
