The breathless flavours, structure and texture of this striking blend are, quite simply, superb. Glistening black cherries, satsuma plum and finely wrought tannins are all on parade. Drink by 2043.
Appearance: deep dark magenta with black cherry edges, opaque and dense
Aroma: deep dark ripe black cherries, black currants, blackberries, ripe plum, forest floor, cedar bark, dark chocolate, cinnamon and baking spices, fire hearth, molasses, and cherry liqueur
Palate: full rich powerful dark forest berries, plum, black cherry, mulberry cassis, salted licorice, sea salt laced dark chocolate, fine complete tannins, mouthcoating and full, yet delicately poised with an elegant backbone of acid. Integrated, refined oak, with a dark earth, tar, and molasses complexity
The 2018 vintage was predicated by heavy winter rains filling up soil profiles, but a warm and calm spring allowed wonderful flowering conditions, setting a healthy crop. The summer continued with no heat spikes (meaning the grapes developed under near perfect conditions) and lead into a cool dry autumn. Little disease pressure allowed the luxury to pick the fruit when the winemaker desired. The slightly-above-average yields gave classically balanced, powerful fruit of depth and complexity.
A small quantity of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon taken from the best estate vines were made in two separate batches. Hand-picked and destemmed into open top fermenters, naturally cold soaked before the ferment was allowed to proceed and followed by gentle hand-plunging daily. Some post-ferment maceration was done for complexity and structure; and the pressing was gentle, creating a powerful yet silky wine
Using 45% new French oak (hogsheads of 300L capacity) the wines were aged on lees for 18 months. In September 2018, Rob Diletti (winemaker) and Duke took samples of the two outstanding wines and by careful tasting and blending, arrived at the final blend. The result is a wine that has intense fruit character and long-lasting acid structure. Age for 20-30 years.
