Single Vineyard Shiraz 2022
A nail-biting finale to the 2022 growing season saw the vineyard lashed by fierce winds and rainy squalls. Yet the shiraz slowly developed both an array of dark fruit aromatics and lush, juicy fruit weight and developed fine and complete tannins, highlighting the granitic minerality of the site and the complexity formed by farming in a marginal yet consistent site. 750ml

93 points, The Real Review
Medium red-purple, bright colour with peppery and meaty aromas, fresh and bright, crisp and clear with bright and intense spice/pepper/red fruit flavours on palate backed by fine-grained tannins that supply a balanced structure.
90 points, Halliday Wine Companion
A fruit-driven style, quite straightforward in its delivery of shiraz, showing off red- and black-berry fruitiness, sweet spice, some cinnamon and fennel spice elements, a touch of sea spray and truffle. Very pleasing, satiny texture with a building puckering grip. Good length of flavour too. All up, successfully delivers a pleasing, easy drinking, not particularly complex but medium-weight, spicy, bright fruited shiraz expression. Dig in.
Appearance: medium-deep magenta, purple edges
Aroma: dark boysenberry, blackberry, mulberry, black cherry, black truffle, lavender, hint of baking spices, cracked black pepper, blackberry bramble, cured charcuterie
Palate: dark forest berries of blackberry and mulberry black, fine complete, powdery tannins, firm but refined, juicy, generous, fresh lavender, hints of cedar, cinnamon, Sichuan pepper, pink peppercorn, bramble, olive brine
Cool, wet winter with a very high rainfall followed by a warm to hot and dry summer. The vines grew quickly, developing excellent canopies. Delayed bud burst, which affected flowering, gave lower yields setting fruit of small size and great concentration. A cool autumn ensued, allowing slow development of flavours and aromatics, with the longer hang time giving dense complete yet fine tannins. This was a cool vintage, which allowed slow development of complex characters and beautiful acidities within the grapes, and although the season was wild with erratic weather, the wines are stunning cool climate expressions of their varieties.
The fruit was selectively harvested picked in early April when optimum ripeness was reached. The fruit was destemmed into a closed top fermenter, draining juice at the crusher to concentrate the must. After several days cold soaking, the must was allowed to warm and fermented with a selected yeast being pumped over 1-3 times daily. A further week of post ferment maceration occurred to develop the complete tannin structure, and the tanks was pressed after 21 days on skins utilising a tank press with a basket press program minimising maceration. The wine was gently drained to French Oak barrique and Hogshead (8% new) and aged for 14 months before being bottled unfined with minimal filtration.
